The wines of Salta: a walk through the clouds

Salta is a province of Argentina, belonging to the Northwest region of the country. This wine-growing region, which also includes the provinces of Jujuy and Tucumán, produces excellent wines that are different from those produced in other regions of Argentina. These are the famous high altitude wines, unique in the world. 

The production of Salta wine takes place mainly in the Calchaquíes Valleys, a system of mountain valleys with an extension of 270 km, shared with the provinces of Catamarca and Tucumán. Viticulture in Salta is strongly influenced by the presence of high altitude vineyards: The cultivated area starts at 1,530 meters and reaches 3,111 meters in Payogasta (department of Cachi).

The city of Cafayate, in the southwest of the province, is the reference centre of viticulture in the north and is characterised by the excellent quality and great varietal character of its wines. It also concentrates 75% of Salta's vineyards and 60% of the total planted area in the Calchaquí valleys. Cafayate has a warm climate and cold nights. It is characterised by a great thermal amplitude with long summers that allow a good growth of the vines, also favoured by deep sandy soils. 

Both the white wine of Salta and the red wine of Salta are characterised by their fruitiness and great varietal typicity. These Argentine wines generally have very good colour, with lively aromas and flavours and intense, ripe tannins. The alcohol content tends to be high.

Among the white grapes, the Torrontés wines from Salta are the most renowned all over the world. The Torrontés grape is a vine that grows only in Argentina, and in Salta especially produces extremely aromatic wines, with a palette of aromas marked by tropical and stone fruits, and also by floral notes such as jasmine or orange blossom. 

Thanks to the exceptional quality of Salta's wines, there is also a great growth within the red varieties, especially Tannat and Cabernet Sauvignon, which are particularly prominent in the Salta region. There are also excellent Malbecs, very different from the wines of Mendoza, as well as Merlot and Petit Verdot.
