Chardonnay is perhaps the most widely planted white grape in the world. An undisputed component of Champagne and many other sparkling wines around the world, it is a grape that in countries such as Argentina, Uruguay and Chile, offers wines with excellent characteristics, ideal to discover this spring-summer. Here are 5 reasons why we enjoy it so much:
Here are 5 reasons why we enjoy them so much:
1) Versatility:
It is a grape that can vary greatly in its aromatic palette and flavour depending on its terroir and winemaking method. In Argentina, Chardonnay wines tend to grow best in the Cuyo region (mainly in the stony, clay soils of Mendoza), as well as in Patagonia. Argentinean Chardonnay wines stand out for their finesse and elegance. In Chile, it is the most planted grape after Sauvignon Blanc, and it is present in all the wine regions of this country. In colder climates, Chardonnay wines can have a sharper acidity, and offer notes and flavours of green apple or pear. In warmer regions, the flavours can be more citrusy, including notes of peach or melon. In very warm regions, notes of tropical fruits such as pineapple, banana and mango may appear.
2) Density and weight on the palate:
Although the sugar levels obtained in this grape are usually relatively high, some Chardonnay can be very light and tart on the palate, similar to a Sauvignon Blanc. However, Chardonnays that have undergone malolactic fermentation in oak barrels will offer well-defined notes of honey, dried apricots, hazelnuts, and toasted butter, presenting a creamier density in the mouth. For this reason, we encourage tasting Chardonnay that has been aged in oak barrels, and whose vintages are not so recent, in order to get to know the potential of the bouquet that this white grape can offer us.
3) Food pairing:
It is an ideal wine for a picnic or an outdoor barbecue. It also goes well with fatty meats or pasta with creamy sauces, as well as with fish dishes. But above all, it is an excellent wine to enjoy on its own, without the need to eat anything while drinking it.
4) Freshness:
It is an ideal companion for spring and summer temperatures. We suggest to drink it always at temperatures between 10° and 12°. Do not add ice to the glass. Being patient and chilling the wine in the right way will allow us to enjoy it to its full potential.
5) Chardonnay & Co:
It is a grape that is not only worth trying as a single varietal, but also as an integral part of blends and cuvees. In this case, blends of Chardonnay with grapes such as Viognier, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc and Moscatel are some of the most common combinations. It is also an ideal grape for the production of botrytised wines or late wines, ideal for lovers of wines with medium to high sugar levels.
